Travel Tips
These simple but important tips will help you enjoy your adventure safely, comfortably and confidently.
1. Stay hydrated
High altitude dehydrates your body much faster.
Drink 2.5–3 liters of water per day, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
2. Protect yourself from the sun
UV radiation at altitude is extremely strong.
Always use:
- high SPF sunscreen
- sunglasses
- hat or buff
Reapply sunscreen during the day, especially in summer.
3. Pack in layers
Weather on mountains such as Ararat, Damavand or Kazbek can change instantly.
Layering allows you to adapt quickly:
- base layer (moisture-wicking)
- mid layer (fleece or soft-shell)
- outer layer (windproof, waterproof)
Avoid heavy cotton clothing.
4. Choose and prepare the right gear
Good gear makes the difference between comfort and struggle.
- Avoid cotton - it stays wet and cold
- Choose wool or synthetic layers
- Use proper hiking socks
- Make sure your boots are broken in before the trip
- Keep rain gear easily accessible
- Pack your daypack the same way each day for efficiency
- Use dry bags or plastic bags to protect clothes and electronics from moisture
Well-prepared equipment means fewer surprises on the mountain.
Recommended gear list you can find HERE.
5. Keep a steady pace
Trekking is not a competition. Walk slowly, breathe regularly and follow your guide’s instructions.
Proper pacing is essential for acclimatization.
6. Avoid alcohol before and during the climb
Alcohol affects hydration, sleep and your body’s ability to adapt to altitude.
Save celebrations for after the summit.
7. Carry snacks for energy
Altitude burns calories quickly.
Eat small portions often.
Great options include:
- chocolate bars
- dates
- dried fruit
- nuts
- energy gels
Most of the mentioned snacks we provide. You can only bring with you energy gels or energy bars.
8. Respect local culture
Especially in Iran and in remote Kurdish villages around Ararat:
- dress modestly
- ask before photographing people
- follow local customs and traditions
A warm, respectful approach is always welcome.
9. Protect your electronics
Cold weather drains batteries very fast.
Keep your phone, camera an power bank close to your body during the day and inside your sleeping bag at night.
10. Keep important documents on you
Always carry your passport, insurance details, cash and emergency contact information in your daypack, not in the luggage transported by horses or vehicles.
