Cilo Mountains (Hakkari region) – Introduction

The Cilo Mountains, located in the remote southeastern corner of Turkey near the borders with Iraq and Iran (Hakkari Province), are one of the wildest, most dramatic and least explored mountain regions in the entire country.

Cilo Mountains Range  is known for its sharp ridgelines, deep glaciers, towering rock faces, turquoise glacial lakes and untouched landscapes.

For decades, the region was closed to tourism. Today, it is slowly opening — giving travelers a rare opportunity to explore a mountain area that remains almost untouched, authentic and truly wild.

Trekking in Cilo means discovering a place that only a handful of visitors have seen, walking through pristine valleys and dramatic couloirs shaped by ancient glaciers.

What Makes the Cilo Mountains Special?

- Untouched wilderness: one of the least visited mountain regions in Turkey

- Raw Alpine scenery: glaciers, ice lakes, dramatic peaks and vertical cliffs

- A sense of discovery: trails without crowds, valleys where silence dominates

- Authentic Kurdish culture: remote villages, shepherd camps and traditional highland life

- High-altitude beauty: peaks over 4000 m and rugged terrain shaped by ice and wind

Cilo is often described as “Turkey’s Himalaya in miniature” — a place where nature remains wild, powerful and completely real.

Best Time for Trekking in the Cilo Mountains

The ideal trekking season is late June to early September, when:

- Snow has melted from the high passes

- Valleys are green and full of alpine flowers

- Glacial lakes reach their peak beauty

- Weather is stable and warm during the daytime

July and August offer the best conditions for longer routes and reaching higher areas.

Best Time for Ski Touring in Cilo Mountains

Ski touring in Cilo is possible but only for experienced skiers.

The best period is from March till end of April.

During these months, snow is deep on the north faces, and the region offers steep, alpine-style ski touring lines.

- a raw, authentic mountain experience

- routes far away from mass tourism
